When Audi's A5 Coupe debuted back in 2007, it caused quite a stir. While it still carried traditional slab-sided Audi styling, it was altogether more shapely and more dashing than previous Audi models. In fact, Walter de'Silva, Audi's Head of Design at the time (and designer of the stunning Audi R8 supercar) said the A5 Coupe was the most beautiful car he had ever created. Of course, a whole design team was responsible for both the A5 Coupe and R8 designs, and of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What's indisputable is that many pundits agree that the A5 is indeed beautiful and have voiced their praise, whereas numerous owners have voted likewise with their wallets. To the pleasure or displeasure of A5 fanciers, Audi has updated the styling (and powertrain options) of the A5 coupe and the changes will take effect for the 2013 model year.

The first most noticeable change over the current A5 is the new car's revised exterior styling. New headlights resemble those of the latest Audi A6 and A8 sedans while the entire rear-end of the car looks more or less identical to the current A5. Interior styling changes are slight and include new materials such as Nappa leather, as well as new steering wheels and an updated gear select lever for A5s equipped with an automatic transmission.

Though the standard 211 horsepower 2.0-litre TFSI engine remains unchanged, it's possible that a new 272 horsepower 3.0-litre TFSI supercharged gasoline engine may be available as an option for the North American version of the A5. A 3.0-litre TDI diesel with 245 horsepower may also be optional. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual unit, a continuously variable multitronic unit, or a dual-clutch seven-speed S tronic sequential automatic. All transmission can be paired with either front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel-drive, in the European market.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) comes standard on front-wheel drive versions of the new A5 and works in conjunction with a limited slip differential. ESP applies the brakes at the inside front wheel during a turn in order to ensure "more agility during dynamic driving." The new A5 is shod in 17-inch wheels measuring 225/50 as standard equipment, but consumers have the option to upgrade to massive 20-inch rollers with equally massive 265/30 measurements. Four new wheel designs are also available.

Also updated is the Audi S5, the high performance version of the A5. The revised S5 is outfitted with a 333 horsepower 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 engine. Audi says the new V6 uses an average of 20 percent less fuel per 100 kilometres when compared to the current S5's larger 4.2-litre V8 engine. The new S5 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and can hit an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
