One year ago, Audi revealed the flagship version of its mid-engine R8 supercar, the R8 GT. The GT offered less weight and more power than the base model and was very exclusive as only 333 units were available for sale. Now, for the 2012 model year – and just in time for summer – Audi is releasing a convertible version dubbed the R8 GT Spyder. Like the GT, there will only be 333 GT Spyders built for the 2012 model year.

The R8 GT Spyder is powered by a 5.2-litre V10 engine with FSI direct injection. It develops peak output of 560 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. Those figures are good for a zero to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 317 km/h.

Audi's automated six-speed R tronic transmission is standard and it features a manual shift mode through the use of steering wheel mounted paddle shifters or a joystick. As with all immensely powerful Audis, quattro all-wheel drive is standard and features a greater rear-wheel bias than the regular R8 with regard to power delivery. However, the quattro system can also send necessary torque to the front wheels should they require extra traction.

Stylistically, the R8 GT Spyder differs from the base model with revisions that include a front splitter, red GT badges, a larger diffuser and darkened LED taillights. Then, of course, there's the lightweight fabric soft top which Audi says can be operated at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

Inside, the R8 GT Spyder features standard Alcantara upholstery, as well as crimson or titanium grey stitching. A Bang & Olufsen stereo system is offered as well as a Bluetooth interface which features a seatbelt microphone. Options on the 2012 R8 GT Spyder include carbon-fibre composite bucket seats, Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) accessories, and embroidered logos for the seats.

The base price of the 2012 R8 GT Spyder in Audi's home country of Germany will be 207,800 euros, which translates into CDN $296,489 according to the Bank of Canada's listed exchange rates. The actual price will be released ahead of the car becoming available later this year.
