One of Prince Albert's largest retailers is getting even bigger.Renovations begin today to add about 4,600 square feet to the Sport Chek store in the Gateway Mall. The new space will become the home of a 2,200 square-foot Nevada Bob's Golf boutique and allow the store to also open up specialty vendors, like an Oakley sunglasses vendor.

Amenities, such as new light fixtures, will also be added to create a "concept store" for the Prince Albert location, according to store general manager Sonnie Whyte.

"Concept stores are newly renovated stores, so a lot of it is we are trying to give you that bling pretty much," he said.

The renovation should take about 10-12 weeks, with the Nevada Bob's Golf section opening up likely in mid-April.

With Lakeland nearby and a number of golf courses in the area, adding a specialized golf section was a no-brainer, added Whyte.

"We are a very golf-oriented market," he said.

Sport Chek intends to add similar golf boutiques to every store within 10 years, but Prince Albert will be one of the first.

Dedicated golf staff would be hired to fill the boutique, so customers would be able to ask technical golf questions, such as the difference between certain golf balls, to knowledgeable staff, according to Whyte.

Putting greens and a virtual driving simulator were also on the construction agenda.

The store made $250,000 more last year than in 2008, according to Whyte, and he said he hoped the store would do even better after renovations.
