STEWIACKE - Phase 1 of a 120-acre commercial-residential development fronting Highway 102, Highway 2 and Main Street West at Stewiacke has been given the green light by provincial officials.
The go-ahead for Stewiacke Estates will result in enough building lots for 37 families in Phase 1, with an additional 10 lots available for commercial development.
The land is situated behind the Dairy Queen and Subway restaurants near where Stewiacke's Main Street meets Highway 102.
The former town property is owned by Perry Lake Developments, which now has the opportunity to go ahead with street and infrastructure development on the site, before the end of this year's construction season.
"We are very pleased that Phase One of the Perry Lake Development plan has been given final approval," says Town of Stewiacke administrative officer Sheldon Dorey in a news release.
"This project is huge for our town. It has the potential to narrow the gap between the residential and commercial assessment as well as create some much-needed employment opportunities. This has been a goal council has been working towards since they first purchased the highway property some years ago."
Dorey says the approval of the project is creating lots of excitement.
"This is the biggest project Stewiacke has seen in a long time. Residents are anxiously awaiting the start of construction."
Once approvals are granted for Phase 2 and Phase 3 on the attached property, the entire development could eventually cover almost 120 acres at Exit 11 along Highway 102.
"We're sizing up demand for Phase One of the property right now," says Larry Gibson of Perry Lake Developments.
"If it proceeds as we expect, we hope to be planning ahead for development Phase 2 by this time next year."
