Residential tax rate unchanged; commercial rate increases in Bible Hill

BIBLE HILL - Homeowners in Bible Hill will not have to dig deeper into their pockets to pay their annual tax rate. However, commercial rate taxpayers aren't as lucky.
The Bible Hill village commission set its 2009-2010 budget Tuesday night. The $2.4-million budget (compared to last year's $2.2-million budget) includes a residential tax rate of 66 cents on every $100 of assessment, unchanged from last year.
"We realize there are folks who are having a tough time," said village chairwoman Sharon McLean.
Over the last five years, the residential rate has gradually increased from 63 cents to 66 cents.
The commercial tax rate will increase 2 cents, to 79.5 of every $100 of assessment. The increase "is because of the (gradual) elimination in the business occupancy tax."

More than $1.4 million is collected in taxes. In regards to expenditures, more than $956,000 will go towards environmental services, including water expansion and sewer system projects.
More than $404,000 will be spent for transportation services, with sidewalk construction/design, streetlight rental and sidewalk snow removal contracts taking the majority of that budget.
The third highest portion of the budget is under the government services section, with more than $165,000 of the total $387,907 paying administrative salaries.
McLean said priority projects include the provision of a water system for Pictou Road and the commercial district, with a price tag of about $1.2 million. Funding is being sought by Building Canada and the Municipality of Colchester.
Also, the village hopes to install a pedestrian sidewalk on Osprey Court, between Talon Court and College Road. If permission is granted by the Transportation of Infrastructure and Renewal Department, a crosswalk could then be requested on College Road at the Osprey Court intersection.
Another project is the installation of a men's and women's washroom, with shower, and storage room at the village's fire hall.
The village is also continuing work on a five-year plan, including a new sanitary storm sewer system to replace a sewage pump system underneath the recreation park on College Road. A new system would eliminate the current pump setup by running a gravity line to Salmon River. The village is applying to Building Canada for $1.8 million for the project.

    I read with interest Sharon's comments that we the taxpayers of Bible Hill will not have to dig deeper into their pockets. Who is she kidding. The assessments have gone up for this year and homeowners will pay more taxes this year from $100. to $400. or more. It is about time the County of Colchester took over Bible Hill and reduced our taxes to the county rates. We receive nothing for the extra taxes we pay to the Village of Bible Hill.
