ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The Newfoundland and Labrador government has put the purchase of new waterbombers on hold.
Transportation Minister Trevor Taylor says after lengthy negotiations they couldn't come to acceptable terms with Bombardier.
Taylor says the company was not prepared to provide adequate security to protect deposits and advance payments in the current economic climate.
A total of $33 million had been budgeted in 2008-09 for down payments, about a third of the total cost.
Taylor says they are still interested in buying but not unless their investment is adequately protected.
The province currently owns and operates six CL 215 waterbombers.
