HALIFAX - Native leaders say they want to be consulted on any developments pertaining to the sale of more than 69,000 hectares of prime timberland in southwestern Nova Scotia.
The property, held by J.D. Irving Ltd., is being marketed through U.S.-based real estate and timberland property consultant LandVest.
Terry Paul, co-chairman of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq Chiefs, says the matter should have been brought to their attention through the group of negotiators trying to settle land claims.
Paul says if the property remains in private hands Mi'kmaq rights and title will be affected, as access to shorelines, lakes, trails and woodlands becomes limited.
Jamie Muir, the minister responsible for aboriginal affairs, says he will get in touch with the chiefs before making any real public response.
The government has already indicated it is not in any position to buy the property.
