FREDERICTON - The mayor of Fredericton says the pain should be spread around if the New Brunswick budget next week contains big cuts to the civil service.
Brad Woodside says the lion's share of the civil service is in Fredericton and if there are going to be cuts he's calling on the government to spread them out provincewide.
He says the capital city is willing to share the burden, but is not prepared to suffer alone.
A government source has indicated there could be hundreds of layoffs and a deficit of close to $800 million in Tuesday's budget.
The Finance Department source says more than a third of the projected deficit can be blamed on increased pension costs, while the rest will go toward economic stimulus.
