No nominees this year for Leo Bruce Entrepreneurial Award

STEPHENVILLE — As an opening luncheon took place for Small Business Week on Monday at Days Inn in Stephenville, there was disappointment in the air.
While those in attendance were enthralled as guest speaker Jeremy Bennett spoke on the subject of “The Secrets of the Mind Business,” there was also an item that was missing from the agenda.
That was the presentation of the Leo Bruce Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence, which is typically given out during Small Business Week. The award was to be presented at the kickoff luncheon prior to the guest speaker’s address, however there were no nominees this year.
“It’s very disappointing that none of the chamber members took the time to nominate a business for the Leo Bruce Award this year,” said Arch Locke, treasurer of the Bay St. George Chamber of Commerce.
He said there are hundreds of small businesses in the Bay St. George area and many of them would be quite deserving of the award, yet none came forward.
Locke said information was emailed to members three times, with the final one as recently as last week just prior to the deadline and still no applications were received.
The Leo Bruce Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence was established in 2000 with the first recipient awarded in 2001. In addition to this year, there was one other year, 2005, the award wasn’t presented due to no nominees.
The award is named in honour of Stephenville businessman Leo Bruce, who was largely responsible for establishing the first Chamber of Commerce in the province in Stephenville.
Locke is hoping that in the future years, businesses will be nominated for the award.
He was encouraged by the presentation given by Bennett that focused on the subconscious and how the subconscious has an impact on business people.
Bennett addressed several topics, including why most businesses fail, subliminal effects on clients, things that influence clients to buy or not to buy. Other areas he tackled included: reducing stress, anxiety and depression in the workplace and how to rewire the mind to attract business.
