Inn tailoring jobs to workers’ needs

CORNER BROOK  Balancing a job and a family can be tough, but a local employer wants to help people find that balance.

Brittany Pilgrim is an agent at Marble Inn and Resort in Steady Brook.

She said the facility has been doing some advertising for various housekeeping and maintenance positions lately, but there’s a twist to them in that they offer potential employees a bit of flexibility.

Pilgrim said the new hiring concept came about because management was noticing that it was hiring people, putting them on a normal daily schedule and then finding  out they had certain needs in terms of available hours. She said it could be related to child care, education or other commitments.

Pilgrim said the thought around the inn was that it could do something to help people.

And while it’s been a practice at the inn in the past, Pilgrim said the idea was to create a more formal program.

“A program where people could get a job where it could accommodate them and accommodate us as well.”

Pilgrim said if an employee needs to come in at a certain time or be finished work at a certain time the inn will work around his or her needs, something that is possible with a lot of the housekeeping and maintenance positions.

“Say somebody has something that they work all day and they wanted to come in the evenings for a couple of hours and say we need somebody to catch up on laundry. We can make it work for them,” said Pilgrim. “We try and tailor the job to what the persons needs are.”
