Ca-ching!: The business side of Halifax Mooseheads’ double championship

HALIFAX - The Halifax Mooseheads’ electrifying run to the Memorial Cup title wasn’t just good for sports fans – it was great for business.

A huge line waits at the Antlers Store at the Halifax Metro Centre on Tuesday to purchase Mooseheads memorabilia.

Mooseheads vice-president of business and operations Brian Urquhart said attendance during regular season games reached unprecedented levels in Halifax, and didn’t let up during the playoffs.

“The (games) near the end were sellouts,” he said. “The crowd support right from the start just grew as we got deeper in the playoffs.”

Although another double-title season is unlikely next year, Urquhart said ticket sales will likely be pretty healthy.

“We’re confident we can have a quality product again on the ice and…from a fan experience standpoint, an entertaining product as well,” he said. “There’s certainly some excitement currently with the Mooseheads and I expect that to continue right up until our home opener on Sept. 12.”

The Antlers store at the Metro Centre was bustling on Tuesday with fans grabbing up the Memorial Cup Champions keepsake t-shirts and hats, as well as other keepsakes.

Urquhart said supporters are just anxious to get their hands on any kind of Mooseheads regalia, though some player jerseys remain particular favorites.

“Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin, and Zach Fucale have been really popular all year and given their strong performance at the Memorial Cup…I don’t expect anyone’s popularity to take a downward spiral at this point,” he said.
