EDMONTON - Alberta conservation groups want federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice to step in to ensure the survival of woodland caribou.
They say provincial efforts to save the declining forest icon are going nowhere in the face of industry pressure and it's time Prentice acted on recent comments that Canada's international image is being blackened by energy development.
Three Alberta conservation groups want Prentice to use an emergency order under the Species At Risk Act to protect caribou habitat in the province's northwest corner
Both the energy and forestry industries are lobbying the government to ensure that a land-use plan being developed for the area doesn't block industrial access.
Last week, Prentice told a Calgary crowd that, without leadership, Canada will be cast as a global poster child for environmentally destructive development.
