CHARLOTTETOWN - The government of Prince Edward Island says it will spend more than $10 million in the next year on its new rural development strategy.
Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair says the plan is built around seven goals aimed at economic and community development, protection of the environment, and human resource development.
The strategy includes the establishment of three rural action centres to be used as a single source of information for businesses, a community economic development investment fund, and support for regional tourism associations.
LeClair says other initiatives are already underway, including rural broadband, the development of a plan for the lobster industry, and new directions for agriculture.
Agriculture Minister George Webster says one of the underlying principles of the plan is to look at the impact all government initiatives have on rural communities.
