HALIFAX - Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter says he is intrigued by a new venture aimed at pushing the idea of a regional electricity transmission system in Atlantic Canada.
But Dexter isn't saying much more about his government's interest other than he will be asking for more information when he meets with corporate officials behind the idea in a couple of weeks.
Fort Reliance, the parent company of Irving Oil Ltd., has created Portage Energy Ltd., which plans to spend up to $2 billion on improving transmission infrastructure with public and private sector partners.
Dexter says the success of the idea will depend on who ultimately makes up the partnership and on the business plan that is put forward.
Fort Reliance has said a regional grid would lower costs to consumers, improve emission performance, and facilitate economic development.
