TRURO - Town council is in the process of scrapping an outdated bylaw dealing with chimney sweep regulations in favour of a registration system to help ensure proper certification standards are met.
"Basically it provides that anyone who does chimney sweeping must be knowledgeable, qualified in that area and can prove knowledge by providing a WETT (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) certificate," said town solicitor John Rafferty, during this week's council meeting.
"An interesting question, I think, is how is it enforced?"
Chimney sweeps are required under national and provincial fire code regulations to have proper certification but as Rafferty observed, enforcement is a questionable
issue.
Council directed staff to prepare a draft policy of the proposed registration system for its Feb. 1 meeting.
Only chimney sweeps with proper certification would be able to register to the system. One of the expected benefits to consumers is that they would be able to call the town prior to hiring a sweep to ensure all proper certifications are in order.
