N.B. woman who claimed kidnapping given discharge, told to get counselling

BURTON, N.B. - A woman who launched an RCMP investigation after claiming she'd been kidnapped by a tattooed man with a gun has been given a conditional discharge.

Marcia Lynette Simmons, 44, of Noonan, N.B., earlier pleaded guilty to public mischief.

She offered no explanation as to why she travelled to Toronto from New Brunswick in August or why she falsely reported she'd been forced to drive there by an armed assailant who didn't exist.

Judge Patricia Cumming told Simmons she must attend mental health counselling and perform 150 hours of community service.

RCMP investigators said Simmons admitted to having made up the story and that she had gone to Toronto alone for personal reasons.

With all the time and resources that she caused to be utillized, she should get a much stiffer penalty. What kind of an example does this set if nothing much is done. Also, what is 150 hours? It is nothing to deter her from doing such a thing again. I think she should be detained until she gets her head straightened out. This just goes to show why crime is the way it is here in Canada. You can do most anything and still not get a serious sentence if any at all. I may not care a lot for certain things in other countries, but most take these things more seriously than our police forces.

this lady is obviously psychotic and should not be in our communtiy, SHE IS CRAZY! SHE NEEDS MORE THAN COUNSELLING
