AMHERST - It was a night full of surprises for the family at Bargain Bennies Ltd., Furniture and Appliances.

Owned by Charlie Rhindress, the business was named business of the year at last night's Amherst and Area Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards Gala.
Rhindress had to ask for his glasses that he forgot on the table before he could read his acceptance speech.
"This is unreal," he said while waiting for his glasses.
"After more than 20 years in business, it's so nice to be recognized like this."
With his wife Judy by his side, and son Mark and son-in-law Brian Goldrich also gracing the stage, Rhindress thanked his family.
"As all of you who run a small business know, you don't do something like this alone. They have been there with me pretty much since the day we started and it's great to go to work every day with the people you care about and trust."
Making reference to the crowd, he also thanked his loyal customers.
"We have been selling to the same group of people for over 20 years and we really wouldn't be here without your support. Some days it's a struggle just to keep going and to keep the door open, but things like this help to make it all feel worthwhile."
Bargain Bennies beat out both Amherst Insurance Ltd., and Deanne Fitzpatrick Rug Hooking Studio.
To kick off the awards, The Regent B&B, owned by Jim and Gwen Kerr, was named the winner of the excellence in customer service award.
Excellence in community service went to PolyCello, while the Amherst Wandlyn Inn was given the environmental, or Green, award.
One of the biggest rounds of applause of the night went to Brad Hoeg, owner and operator of Shine Depot, who was named the winner in the young entrepreneur category.
A special presentation was also handed out to Cathy and Donna White of Fort B Flowers for showing a desire in being involved with the awards gala. Each table was adorned by a centerpiece courtesy of the floral shop.
Photos of winners in other categories will be published next week.
