AMHERST - Five jobs in Amherst will be eliminated as Aliant reorganizes its customer contact centres in Atlantic Canada.
Bell Aliant announced late last week 11 of its 16 centres, including one in Amherst, are closing as the company introduces a new model of contact centre operations.
The 200 permanent unionized employees who work in the 11 centres are being offered positions in larger centres.
"It is difficult for any organization, let alone one of our size and scale, to efficiently operate that many centres, particularly the smaller ones," said president and chief executive officer Karen Sheriff.
"It is not only challenging to provide appropriate management, coaching and training in each location but it is no longer a sustainable or effective model. That is why our peers and competitors, relative to their size, operate with far fewer centres than we do."
Centres that have less than 50 employees are being consolidated into five larger centres, located in Halifax, Moncton, Charlottetown, Saint John, N.B., and Mount Pearl, N.L.
"Every one of these 200 people that are across the region will be offered relocation," said Brenda Reid, Bell Aliant spokeswoman.
Of the 200 people, 103 are in Nova Scotia at the following locations: New Glasgow (47), Sydney (38), Amherst (five) and Bridgewater (four).
The new contact centre operations are to be implemented by mid-April 2010 and are expected to "simplify the customer experience, boost sales and customer service performance, enhance employee training, and improve our operating costs," said Sheriff.
Cumberland North MLA Brian Skabar was disappointed by the news.
"I understand that employees and their families will be upset by this," he said.
"Even one job lost is one too many."
He said the Department of Labour and Workforce Development is prepared to offer transition support, including access to education and training programs for the impacted employees.

I really am going to miss the centre at the Amherst mall. The staff are very knowledable, curtious and professional
in handling the public who use the store. Of all the Aliant stores I have dealt with in Nova Scotia the one in Amherst is by far the best. Is there anyway that we can convince Aliant not to close this great little store?
