ST. JOHN'S - A federal Fisheries Department investigation has led to $500,000 in fines being handed out for misreporting crab landings.
Labrador Sea Products received the largest fine of $275,000 during sentencing this week in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court.
Phillip Hillyard, a director for Labrador Sea Products, and Barry Hatch, a plant manager with Quinlan Brothers Ltd., were each fined $50,000.
Fisherman Randy Noonan was fined $25,000 for misreporting his crab catch.
This investigation resulted in earlier convictions for four fishermen who were each fined $25,000.
The investigation began after a routine inspection in 2003 of the Labrador Sea Products plant in Black Tickle.
