CHARLOTTETOWN - Roughly 500 cattle seized by the Farm Credit Corporation will be staying on P.E.I., at least for the time being.
The decision to keep the cattle, which belong to Village Green farmer Sterling Mitchell, was reached after dozens of farmers staged a protest in Vernon Bridge Friday, blocking the removal of the animals during the attempted farm foreclosure.
For now the cattle are staying at a farm in Hermitage, a relief for Mitchell, as the animals were initially headed to Truro, N.S.
Peter Verleun, chair of the P.E.I. Cattlemen's Association, says Mitchell's situation is one potentially facing many Island farmers.
As far as both men understand the cattle will remain on the Island as Mitchell's property for another 21 days.
After that they become property of the Farm Credit Corporation and will likely be sold off.
