HALIFAX - A suicide barrier will be built on both sides of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge over Halifax harbour.
The CBC reported Tuesday that the barrier will run the full length of the 54-year-old structure.
A steel barrier currently only exists on a section of bridge overlooking the naval dockyard.
The Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission has said in the past that the bridge couldn't handle the weight of an extended barrier.
However, Steve Snider, the commission's CEO, said Tuesday that testing by engineers has confirmed it can be erected safely.
The plan calls for adding more than a metre to the height of the existing railing.
"They've said that we can put the additional loading on there and the bridge would be perfectly safe," Snider told the CBC.
"We didn't have these computer models back in 1999 when we were adding the third lane. Now we have it, and I'm very confident as are our engineers. My trust is in them."
