SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - Cargill Inc. is selling its Swift Current feed mill and property to New Generation Pork Finishing Inc., a Manitoba operation that is expanding into Saskatchewan.
The privately held companies did not disclose the terms of the transaction Tuesday, but they said the American agribusiness conglomerate will provide management services at the mill.
New Generation Pork Finishing, which runs a 5,000-sow farrowing operation near the hamlet of Hamiota in western Manitoba, said the Swift Current feed mill complements a separate acquisition of hog facilities in the area.
The addition of the Saskatchewan finishing capacity enables New Generation to produce over 125,000 market hogs a year.
''With the populating of the hog finishing barns, new jobs have and will continue to be brought to the Swift Current and southwest Saskatchewan area in a time when many positions in the industry are being reduced or eliminated,'' stated Dickson Gould, an official of New Generation.
Cargill said its ''commitment to Western Canada's livestock industry is enduring and robust,'' and it will serve feed customers in Saskatchewan ''through the development of manufacturing capabilities in North Battleford.''
