HOUSTON - A crew member of a cargo ship hijacked by African pirates has sued the owner of the U.S-flagged vessel. He accuses the Maersk shipping company of knowingly putting the crew in danger.
Richard Hicks, the chief cook on board the Maersk Alabama, was aboard the ship attacked by pirates this month off Somalia's coast.
He alleges in his suit filed today in Houston that the Danish company ignored requests from sailors to improve safety measures.
Hicks is seeking at least $75,000 in damages.
