LAS VEGAS - Somebeachsomewhere ruled as king of the desert Wednesday night when he was acclaimed Horse of The Year and Pacer of the Year in the United States, becoming the first Maritime-owned and Canadian-sired horse ever to win the coveted awards.

Owned by the Schooner Stable of Truro, Somebeachsomewhere received the Dan Patch awards from the United States Harness Writers Association at the Night Of Champions banquet in Las Vegas.

He outpolled Hambletonian winner Deweycheatumnhow 121-35 for Horse Of The Year honors.

For a horseman from Canada to win this award is just unbelievable,?said a jubilant Brent MacGrath, the Truro car salesman who trained and co-owned the pacer who earned $3.5 million in his career.

Somebeachsomewhere, who also won the Dan?Patch award for three-year-old pacing colts, was earlier selected as Canadas Horse of the Year.
