N.S. chicken processor lays off more than 300 employees

KENTVILLE, N.S. There are major layoffs at a chicken processor in Nova Scotias Annapolis Valley.

ACA Co-operative Ltd. says it is eliminating 75 unionized and 40 non-union positions at its main processing plant in New Minas.

Its also letting go another 187 unionized employees at Eastern Protein Foods, a subsidiary that produces poultry products at a plant in Kentville.

ACA has also filed for creditor protection for the Eastern Proteins operation.

The ACA plant lost about $6 million last year while Eastern Protein lost another $1.8 million.

Not affected by the cuts are the companys retail outlet, hatchery and farm equipment divisions in New Minas, the feed division in Greenwich, and the egg division in Port Williams.
