CHARLOTTETOWN The P.E.I. government has decided to maintain the status quo on Sunday shopping, only permitting the practice from Victoria Day weekend through Christmas.

Attorney General Gerard Greenan confirmed Wednesday the province will not change the law prohibiting Sunday shopping from January through much of May.

Greenan said the law, adopted in 2007, appears to have struck a balance of economic demand and social preference.

P.E.I. remains the only province in Canada to make year-round Sunday shopping illegal.

A legislative committee had recommended that stores be granted the choice of opening on Sundays year-round.
