AMHERST - Handling a big horse has become secondhand for Jessie Dowe of Amherst.
So much so that she keeps wracking up the wins in horse show competitions.

AMHERST - Handling a big horse has become secondhand for Jessie Dowe of Amherst.
So much so that she keeps wracking up the wins in horse show competitions.
The long list of outstanding performances in 2007 for the 18 year-old pre-veterinary medicine student includes first place in nine competitions, five year-end awards from the Greater Moncton Equestrian Club, 14 year-end awards from the New Brunswick Appaloosa Horse Club and 14 top ten standings in the Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada.
"I was probably proudest about receiving the Youth Performance Award from the New Brunswick Appaloosa Horse Club," Dowe said. "This is my first year going on that circuit and it's one of the more competitive ones, so to do well at those shows felt good because it was at a higher level."
Taking her game to a higher level is exactly what Dowe plans to do next year.
"Because of the way the divisions vary from circuit to circuit I'm still a youth for the New Brunswick Appaloosa Horse Club," Dowe said.
"But for the Greater Moncton Equestrian Club I'll be senior rider next year. I'm hoping to do well against some of the older riders."
Dowe will begin preparing her horse, Lucy, for competition in March.
"I start getting her ready for show season around the start of March to get her back in shape," Dowe said. "Then in April we go for a month or so of training, then I ride her for an hour and a half a day from May to October."
Lucy is 13 year-old and will be 14 come Spring. Dowe has had Lucy for six years and has been riding her for five years.
"She's a great horse. She's old enough that she has a lot of experience but she's still not too old that she's not competitive," Dowe said. "She's at the older end of her mid-life so she's still very competitive."
