Winter is haymaking season for salt producers and this winter The Canadian Salt Company is reaping the rewards from the bushels of snow heaped upon Nova Scotia.
"It's been a busy winter for us so far," Joe Wojgonik, Media Spokesperson for Chicago based Morton Salt, the parent company of The Canadian Salt Company, said. "We usually have the Pugwash plant closed down over the Christmas and the New Year Holiday, but we worked during that time to meet the challenges the weather has thrown our way."
And they will continue to work at full capacity.
"What we've done to try to keep up with demand is we've been working 24/7 and we will continue to do so for the next few weeks," Wojgonik said. "That's on the production side but also, we normally load trucks just sixteen hours a day but we're going 24/7 there as well to keep the flow going."
Shortages of sidewalk safety salt have been widely reported in the Halifax area but a large run on salt has not occurred in the Cumberland County area.
Though bags of salt are not available at all service stations, safety salt can quickly be found with one or two phone calls.
Wojgonik said the recent stormy weather is not something new for Cumberland County.
"If you're a long term residents there, you know this kind of weather happens from time to time," Wojgonik added. "With that being said, our main concern is to always do our best to guarantee the safety of the public."
For those who are tired of all the snow, Wojgonik offers some hope.
"Here in Chicago we're suppose to get a warming trend over the next few days and I understand that should be reaching you guys soon after," Wojgonik added.
