Councillors support only national, provincial, municipal flags

UPPER NAPPAN - Cumberland County may soon have a policy on whose flag can fly outside the E.D. Fullerton Municipal Building in Upper Nappan.

UPPER NAPPAN - Cumberland County may soon have a policy on whose flag can fly outside the E.D. Fullerton Municipal Building in Upper Nappan.

Council has asked its policy committee to make a recommendation on flag raisings at the municipal building with councillors feeling the only ones that should be permitted are the municipal, provincial and Canadian flags.

"We should have a policy in place and as far as I'm concerned we should restrict it to the three flags," Coun. Kathy Redmond said during a committee of the whole meeting here Wednesday morning. "I don't think we should fly any specialty flags."

Council's decision comes in the aftermath of Truro's move earlier this summer not to fly the gay pride flag at town hall in conjunction with Gay Pride Week celebrations in neighbouring Pictou County. The town's decision not to fly the flag and comments from mayor Bill Mills made national headlines and garnered national headlines for the town, as well as hundreds of letters both for and against the town's move.

Recently, Amherst's town manager Greg Herrett said the gay pride flag would be permitted to fly outside the Confederation Memorial Building on Ratchford Street provided any application met the town's flag-raising/proclamations policy.

County warden Keith Hunter said the municipality's policy should not only cover flags but should also cover proclamations.

"The two should go hand in hand," the warden said.

Coun. John Reid disagreed though saying the two aren't connected adding just because the county may not want to fly flags other than from the three levels of government that shouldn't mean it should not sign proclamations.

yes,the flag policy is long overdue. without one any activest group as the one in question will fly a flag . the provincial or federal flag would lose meaning as they become insignificant within the deck.
