Aerial spraying goes ahead in Roslin

A planned protest of aerial herbicide spraying in Roslin never got off the ground Tuesday as the North Nova Forest Co-op Ltd. and the contracted sprayer arrived onsite just after 6 a.m. and applied the spray.

Only local beekeeper Jerry Draheim was at the site to protest the spraying when the helicopters rolled through.

North Nova silviculture supervisor Bruce MacLeod and Roslin resident Dale Brown (who arrived during the spraying) confirmed Draheim went onto the sprayed property hoping they wouldn't spray while he was trespassing.

But the helicopters applied the herbicide Vision on all of the 22-hectare lot except one strip where Draheim was in the way.

Draheim couldn't be reached for comment.

"We got 'er all done," MacLeod said yesterday afternoon in a phone interview. "We just left the strip off where he was at to stay away from him. We'll probably go in and touch that up later I'd imagine."

MacLeod said he wasn't surprised that the protesters weren't onsite and was glad there was no confrontation.

"I wasn't really shocked. We've had protests before and typically it turns out to be two or three people and then that's typically it," he said. "I would have to guess they just didn't get out of bed early enough, because they planned on coming.

"I'm just glad it's done."

Brown was disappointed that the group wasn't able to stop the spray, but doesn't feel their public outcry failed.

"It's disheartening that people are scared to stand up and saying anything or do anything, but more and more people are recognizing that we have to be more astute at protecting our own personal health and property," he said. "To me, it's about morally standing up for your personal beliefs.

"This is all telling me that these people are experts in forestry. I question that, deeply. If these are our experts, I feel sorry for our world."
