ROSLIN - A group of residents here have postponed their protest of a proposed aerial herbicide spraying program in the area until later this week.

The company applying the herbicide, North Nova Forest Owners Co-op Ltd., informed the group that they won't be spraying until Thursday or Friday at the earliest.

Roslin beekeeper Jerry Draheim claims the contractor told him he'd be given notice before the herbicide is applied, so the protest group has let their guard down until they're notified of when it's happening.

Truro Road resident Judy Davis, an environmental activist veteran and who was part of the successful protest that prevented aerial spraying in her area recently, was among the group of roughly a dozen protesters in Roslin on Monday. She feels somebody should still be at the Roslin site, just in case North Nova goes in to spray without notifying the group.

"I would like to still be there," Davis said yesterday. "But that's up to the neighbours there and they seem to feel comfortable with that. I'm just working with them.

"We're hoping (Draheim) is going to keep a good eye on things and the people in the neighbourhood are also keeping their eyes open for any trucks or helicopters moving in."

North Nova's silviculture supervisor Bruce MacLeod said the helicopters needed to apply the herbicide Vision still haven't arrived.

"They certainly have the right to stand out in front of the property and protest all they want and call who they want, but as soon as they actually step onto the landowners' land, then they're trespassing and the local authorities will deal with that," MacLeod said. "Them being on an adjacent lot next to it will have no bearing on whether we spray or not.

"It's a safe product. It's been proven safe. It's very effective in growing trees and we're standing behind that."
