PICTOU (Staff) Charlie Parker, NDP transportation and public works critic and MLA for Pictou West, is calling on the Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Angus MacIssac, to provide Nova Scotians with an up-to-date list of overpass and bridge repair requirements and priority list.

Nova Scotias infrastructure is getting older and bridges are a lot like people, they have a life span and not all (bridges) will survive their useful life, said Parker. Thorough testing of our bridges and overpasses is paramount as some of our structures are more than 100 years old. Equally important is public confidence that our bridges are being inspected and maintained on a regular basis and the best way to instill this confidence is to have an easily accessible website or list available for those who want to see it.

Parker wants the Department of Transportation to be open with Nova Scotians regarding all bridge work requirements.

What testing has the department been carrying out over the last year? Nova Scotians deserve to know that they are safe to travel on all of the bridges in this provinces. Assurances to the public that our structures are safe shouldnt be asking too much, said Parker.

Parker added that the NDP holds the view that the best way to ensure that the worst bridges get repaired first is to carry out inspections and create a publically accessible priority list.

The way things are today, Nova Scotians cannot be sure that (government) decision are being made with their best interests and safety in mind, Parker said. If that were the case, the Department of Transportation would immediately address bridge concerns and ensure all Nova Scotians have the information and piece of mind they deserve.
