Keeping a well-tuned machine

JOGGINS Its fair to say that Jeremy Allen is one of Canadas best up-and-coming mechanics.

Hes got proof.

In April, Allen took home a gold medal in post-secondary automotive service at the 2007 Nova Scotia Skills Competition in Halifax.

That earned him the right to participate in the Canadian Skills Competition in Saskatoon in June, where he earned a silver medal competing against the best young mechanics in Canada.

The 24-year-old Joggins native who works as a mechanic at Canadian Tire said he had hoped to win provincials this year after finishing third at the event last year.

Since it was his first time at nationals, he didnt know what to expect. He especially didnt expect to do so well.

"I knew I had to represent Nova Scotia, so I wanted to do my best. I studied as much as I could, and thats all you can do," he said. "I was a little worried about provinces like Ontario and BC because to get to that, they had to go through more people than me in Nova Scotia, but I knew it would be a challenge and I was up for it. I prepared myself as best I could."

Allen went to Nova Scotia Community College Pictou Campus to study motor vehicle repair and has been apprenticing for nearly four years to fulfil the 8000 work hours requirement.

He has to do one more training course before he graduates that hell take around this time next year. If hes not done the course by the time next years competitions role around, hes setting his sights on national gold and a shot at the world competition.

But even though he didnt win nationals this year and theres no guarantee hell win next year, hes very proud of what hes accomplished.

"If you win a medal at a hobby or something, thats awesome, but when you can win a medal doing what you do at work everyday, thats a good feeling," he said. "Its good to know that youre efficient and professional about what you do."
