AMHERST - Helen Triff is dedicated to cadets.

She's been involved with cadets at various levels for nearly 30 years, has helped out with summer camps on 20 different occasions, and has taken part in two exchange programs. Oh wait, make that three exchanges.

Executive officer Lt(N) Triff of the 258 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Amherst leaves today for Ottawa where she will unite with the RCSCC international exchange co-ordinator before meeting in Vancouver on Friday with the four cadets she'll travel to Japan with as their escort officer. Then they head to Tokyo on Sunday.

"I'm just absolutely thrilled. To see that part of the world, their culture…it's very exciting," Triff said yesterday. "Even the day I went to the bank to pick up my Japanese yen (I was excited). It's just all so different."

While in Japan, she and the cadets will do some sight seeing, some training, and catch up with other international cadet corps. As an escort officer, Triff will be responsible for making sure her cadets are organized and prepared for each event.

Triff participated in two previous exchanges: one as an escort officer 13 years ago for a trip to Bermuda and one as a cadet as a teen where she travelled to the United States east coast.

The 45-year-old E.B. Chandler family studies teacher hadn't been involved in any kind of cadet summer program over the last couple of years and decided it was time to help out again.

"I look at it as a great opportunity for the kids and I'm there to guide them and to help them get the best that they can out of the exchange," she said. "I guess to be helping them get the most out of this exchange is the biggest honour for me."
