Sunset recently honoured its 135 volunteers with an appreciation dinner at Northumberland Links in Pugwash.

Manager of lifestyle and volunteer services Bonnie Langille said some of the things the volunteers help out with include: fundraising, teaching, putting together Christmas stockings, preparing for parties, playing music, instructing yoga, painting, baking, scrapbooking, playing basketball and softball, taking trips to the zoo and wildlife parks and writing letters to clients in the friendship program.

The volunteers are able to add life. Theyre an extended hand, theyre the icing on the cake, theyre the last ingredient that makes us what we are, said Sunset Community executive director Mary Ellen Pittoello. We provide really good care staff-wise, but the volunteers add a specialness to it that we wouldnt have without them.

Langille said Sunset simply wouldnt function in the same way without its volunteers.

Theres so much we can do, but theres so much we cant do without them. We can provide (the clients) with extra recreation. We can provide them with extra cash, she said. (The volunteers) are all the good stuff. Theyre all the trimmings. They really make all the difference.

Langille said it was time to do something for the volunteers because they add some much to the Sunset Community and dont get enough in return.

They do so much at their own cost, she said. They give so much time, they care so much, they give their fuel to get to us, they take clients placesand we cant give anything back because theres no room, theres no budget. So the least we can do is bring them together and say you are so important to the lives of these clients.
