County looking at other water and sewer services options

Tired of waiting, Cumberland County is going to go its own way trying to bring water and sewer services to areas around Amherst.

The partnership template presented in the Cumberland Partnership Study for the provision of water and sewer services in the areas adjacent to the town significantly encumbers potential development in the Municipality of Cumberland and subsequently is unacceptable, Coun. Gerald Read said during the countys first May council session on Wednesday.

Discussions with the town have failed to provide a satisfactory resolution to the municipalitys concerns.

As a result, the county is walking away from that component of the partnership study with the town because it needs to move forward with the sewer and water projects and cannot wait for the town any longer.

The county is facing a number of infrastructure needs in areas around the town and hoped the partnership study with the town would have been quicker at allowing county residents to access town sewer and water services.

Amherst bylaws prevent extending sewer services beyond town boundaries while the town has also indicated its unwilling to extend water further into the county.
