AMHERST – Provincial basketball action starts today at Amherst Regional High School.

“This is what we’ve been playing for all season,” said Vikings coach Thomas Skabar.

The Vikings are defending provincial champions.

“We have a veteran group with a lot of Grade 12 guys and I know they want to finish their high school careers on a high note,” he added. “And we’re going to do our best to make that happen.”

Seven players are finishing up their high school basketball careers with the Vikings this weekend: Adrian Van Vulpen, Jason Morse, Marcus Kindervater, Kirk Jessome, Willie Legere, Caleb Hayes and Matt McCrossin.

The team enters the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division 2 Boys provincial championship tournament as the No. 1 seed.

“It’s important that they remember that even though they’re the No. 1 seed that there’s not going to be any easy games, so we want to bring a high level of intensity and execution every time we step on the court.”

Skabar says the team has a lot of good shooters and is good on the fast break, “and because of our athleticism we have the potential to do really well on defence.”

This is the first time in four years that the senior boys have hosted the provincials.

“They might be feeling a little bit of pressure but, more than anything, I think they’re feeling excited about the chance to host a provincial championship at home in their own gym. It doesn’t happen very often,” said Skabar. “They’re a talented group and have a lot of potential, so hopefully they can put everything together this weekend.”
