Stamping out impaired driving

Impaired driving offences are in the crosshairs of local law enforcement agencies.

Const. Aaron Graham of the Amherst Police Department hands out literature during the MADD Red Ribbon Campaign launch in Oxford on Friday.

OXFORD – The 10th Annual Cumberland County MADD Red Ribbon Campaign is underway.

RCMP officers from throughout Cumberland County joined with Amherst Police, volunteer firefighters from Oxford, members of the Cumberland County chapter of MADD, vehicle compliance officers and Natural Resources to hold an information checkstop on Main Street in Oxford on Friday afternoon to officially launch the campaign.

"For a quarter century, MADD Canada's red ribbon has been a simple, yet powerful, symbol of the fight against impaired driving," MADD's regional co-ordinator Susan MacAskill said prior to the launch. "Over the next two months, thousands of volunteers and our corporate sponsors will distribute millions of these red ribbons across the country.

"We'll be asking Canadians to tie them on their cars, key chains, purses, briefcases and backpacks. We want to see them everywhere, as a reminder to people about the dangers of impaired driving."

Each year, between 1,250 and 1,500 people are killed and more than 63,000 injured in impaired driving-related crashes. MacAskill said the ribbons are a tribute to all those killed or injured in those crashes and their loved ones, who are affected.

For MacAskill, it's personal. Her father was killed by an impaired driver in 1993 near Glenholme. His killer only served seven months of a three-and-a-half-year sentence.

Police will be hold checkstops across Cumberland County seeking impaired drivers during the holiday season.

Const. Travise Dow of the Cumberland RCMP said it's important for people to arrive alive and that means using a designated driver or making other travel arrangements if you're going to have a few drinks.
