CAMBRIDGE STATION, Kings Co. - The Amherst Vikettes came oh so close to taking home the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division 2 girls soccer championship banner Sunday.
Amherst, which led 2-1 at halftime of the championship game against tournament host Central Kings Gators, couldn't hang on and wound up losing a heartbreaker 3-2 in a shootout.
The tournament had been scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but poor weather pushed the schedule back a day.
"We fought hard to the end and everyone played well," said Vikettes head coach Amanda Barlow, who completes her first season at the helm. "It was a good game on both sides and it could've gone either way."
Katelyn Peters and Chrysti Harrison staked the Vikettes to the first-half lead. Amherst went first in the five-on-five shootout and didn't score, and Central Kings converted its first opportunity.
It was 3-2 for the hosts when the Vikettes were stopped on their last chance, meaning the Gators didn't need to use their remaining shooter.
It was the final game for Vikettes senior striker Tina Leggett, midfielder Kelli Burbine and defender Michelle Anderson.
The Vikettes were making their second straight trip to provincials, having finished fourth in 2008.
"We had a really good year," said Leggett, 17. "It's a little disappointing not to win, but we improved on last year, and this should be a good team next season."
Barlow said 13 of the 16 members of her team are eligible to return next season.
Vikings assistant coach Michelle Stubbart was unable to attend the game for personal reasons.
On Saturday, Amherst blanked the Breton Education Centre Bears of New Waterford 3-0 in the semifinals. Harrison, Alex Hicks and Paige Lewis were the goalscorers. Jessica Kinnear earned the shutout. Central Kings ousted Northeast Kings 4-0 in the other semi.
