AMHERST - Junior C hockey fans will get their fill Friday night as the CIBC Wood Gundy Fundy Phantoms host the Avon River Rats at 9 p.m. at Amherst Stadium and the Oxford Tim Hortons Colts host the Mariners beginning at 8 p.m. at the Oxford Arena.

The Phantoms play one game this weekend, while the Colts have three games on tap.

“The Mariners are still the class of the league and if we want to give them a good game Friday night we’ll have to stay out of the penalty box because they have lots of scoring power in their lineup,” Colts coach Paul Atkinson said.

One of those players they’ll have a hard time keeping in check is Ryan Morris, who is second in league scoring with 40 goals and 19 assists. The Colts and the Mariners have met four times this season and the Mariners won 8-4 and 9-1 in Oxford, and 13-2 and 5-4 in overtime at the Eastern Shore Recreation Centre.

This will be the last meeting of the regular season between the two teams, and the Colts could meet them again in the playoffs if they can hang on to fourth place in the Central Division.

On Saturday the Colts travel to Chester play the Clippers.

Atkinson said the Colts will try to trap the Clippers and keep their number one line, which includes the league’s top scorer Justin Norris, off the scoreboard.

“The Clippers like to play a rough game and it will be a learning process for our new players as the Chester Arena is usually a tough place to play because their fans like to intimidate the visiting team,” Atkinson said. “We need to play a disciplined game because we need all of our players for Sunday’s key match up against the Fuelers.”

Last weekend the Colts defeated the Fuelers 9-8 in a shootout in Digby.

“These are the games that our team has to win in order to make the playoffs,” Atkinson said. “We need a big effort in this game from everybody and we simply can’t lose any players due to suspensions during our game Friday night against the Mariners, and during our game in Chester.”

Cody Sutton scored a hat trick for the Colts in the win over the Fuelers.

The pucks drop Friday night at Amherst Stadium at 9 p.m. and at the Oxford Arena at 8 p.m.
