Colts sweep Lions, play Fundy Rhino in round two

Playoffs Start Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Amherst Stadium

Colts goaltender, Matt Caron, and the rest of the Colts will play the Fundy Rhino in the second round of the NSJCHL playoffs. 

CLARE ­ – The Amherst Colts advanced to the best-of-seven semi-final round of the Nova Scotia Junior C Hockey League playoffs after winning their best-of-five playoff series against the Clare Lions.

They swept the series 3-0 after beating the Lions 8-2 Friday night in Clare at the University of Saint Anne Arena.

The Lions lone goal came less than two minutes into the first period but after that it was all Colts.

Ryan Horseman had three goals and three assists for the Colts, Andrew Barron scored three goals, Conrad Leger score one goal and one assist, and Matt Richard scored one goal.

David Lockerby added two assists, and Sullivan Cullen, Noah Perrin, Aaron Crocker, Brandon Crocker and Spencer Maskill added one assist each. 

Colts goaltender Matt Caron faced 25 shots, and Lions goaltender Matt Smith faced 31 shots.

The Colt won the first two games 6-5 and 7-1.

A total of 86 penalties were issued in those first two games in Amherst, 52 in the first game and 34 in the second game.

That number was cut down substantially in the third game, where a total of 19 penalties were issued – 11 for the Colts and eight for the Lions.

The Colts will play the Fundy Rhino in the best-of-seven, second round of the NSJCHL playoffs. The Rhino play out of Truro.

The Colts will get home-ice advantage after they finished the regular second in the league’s regular season standings with 41 points. Fundy finished a close third with 38 points.

Their first game is Saturday at 3:30 p.m., and the second game is Sunday at 4 p.m. Both games are at Amherst Stadium.

The other semi-final series will feature the Spryfield Silver and Black Attack and the Barrington sea Star Ice Dogs.

Spryfield got a bye in the first round of the playoffs after they finished first in regular season with 47 points.

Barrington made to the semi-finals after beating the Avon River Rats 3-1 in their best-of five series.
