Eagles looking to host potential tournament at high school

AMHERST-It might not have been the championship game that was expected, but it was the final that people received Saturday at Spring Street Academy. The Springhill Mini Eagles beat the Spring Street Academy (SSA) Springers 38-28.

“This was the final game that no one expected,” stated tournament organizer Peter Nixon. “Way to go. All of the games have been close, which is good for the players, but hard on the coaches because the scores have been so close.”

Other action from the four team grade 5/6 girls mini basketball tournament saw the Springhill Eagles defeat the Cumberland North Academy (CNA) 27-7 on Friday and twice more on Saturday. While Cyrus Eaton Elementary got by CNA in a close 22-17 decision on Friday, it was CNA that edged the host SSA 27-25 on Saturday.

In Cyrus Eaton Elementary school’s other three games, they dribbled to a 40-40 tie with SSA on Friday before beating the eventual champions 33-25 on Saturday en route to a third place finish. They also lost 34-23 on Saturday to second place SSA.

“I’m just happy that I have 12 girls ready to learn the game and work so hard for something they really care about,” stated Springhill Mini Eagles coach Phil Scott following the championship game. “We practice out of West End and Junction Road Elementary (schools). The gym just open at the (Springhill) high school. They have the new nets that move up and down, so we can play out of there now. Maybe we can get two to three teams together and a have a tournament there.”

Up next for the Springhill Eagles is a tournament in Sackville, New Brunswick.
