AMHERST – The Amherst Ramblers have one Maritime Hockey League contest on tap this weekend. They travel to Yarmouth tonight to face off against the Mariners.

“We have to be prepared to play a good, smart road game,” said Jim Bottomley, Ramblers coach and general manager. “Getting the victory is very important to us.”

The Mariners were in Amherst last Saturday and the Ramblers beat them 8-3.

“We played a good game. We kept coming at them,” said Bottomley. “They’re back at home after losing a couple games and they’re not going to want to be beaten at home, so we have to be at the top of our game.

“Any team can win on any night.”

The standings reflect that fact. Only six points separates the Pictou County Weeks Crushers and the fourth place Mariners. The Crushers have 55 points, the Truro Bearcats have 54 points, the Ramblers 51 and the Mariners 49.

The Ramblers might have only one game this weekend but their schedule picks up at the end of February.

“In late February we play seven games in 10 days, so we’ll be working hard in practice to prepare for that,” said Bottomley.

The Ramblers spent the last part of their practice Wednesday night racing back and forth across the length of the ice.

“It’s going to come down right to the end of the regular season schedule, so if we can help our cause we’re going to do that,” said Bottomley when asked about the sprints across the ice.

Bottomley says backup goalie Billy Clarke will start tonight’s game, which starts at 7:30 p.m.
