Belyea scored three times in 4-4 tie on Sunday

The ARHS Vikings picked up a win and a tie in opening weekend action in the Northern NS High School Hockey League.

PORT HAWESBURY – Stephen Belyea had three goals and an assist as the ARHS Vikings tied the SAERC Saints 4-4 in Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League action on Sunday.

Dylan Baker also scored for the Vikings, who built up a 3-0 second period lead before running into injury problems, while Mitchell Speight and Brandon Greeno added assists.

"Anytime you can pick up three out of four points it's a good thing," Vikings' assistant coach Darrell Cole said Monday. "We had to battle through some adversity on Sunday. We lost a couple of players to injury early Sunday and we were already shorthanded. The guys dug down deep and got a tie against a very good hockey team."

Taylor Pierce had two goals for the Saints and added an assist, while Andrew Morgan had a goal and an assist.

Dylan Chetwynd also scored for the Saints, who forced overtime with a goal midway through the third period.

"Even when we were up 3-0 we knew the game was a long way from being over. They threw the body at us pretty good and just wore us down," Cole said. "The guys didn't fold, though, and found a way to hang on to the tie."

Matt Hunter has a strong game in goal for the Vikings, who are in a tournament in Kingston this coming weekend.

On Friday, the Vikings honoured longtime phys ed teacher Bill Hiltz during their season-opener and eked out a 5-4 win over the Northumberland Night Hawks

Brad Black had the winning goal when his shot from the top of the left circle beat goalie Kyle McKenzie.

Alex VanSnick and Speight scored to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead early in the second period before the Night Hawks got goals from Ben Morrissey, Lance Emery and Dallas MacDonald scored to give Northumberland a 3-2 lead.

Greeno scored on the power play with a blast from the point 5:38 into the final period and Ryan Ackles scored five minutes later as the Vikings restored the lead. Jordan Wheeler scored at 14:02 to knot the game at four.

Greeno had two assists for the Vikings, who had three power play goals in the game. Belyea, William Gogan, VanSnick, Ackles, Justin Leach, Brody Deegan and Gordon Mitchell each had assists.

Northumberland outshot Amherst 29-14 with Vikings' goalie Evan MacKenzie earning the win between the pipes.
