ANTIGONISH – Six young swimmers brought their hard work to a NovaTech competition in Antigonish and came home with multiple best times and top ten finishes.

“NovaTech focuses on developing new swimmers and allows them an introduction to competitive swimming at their individual levels,” said coach Jan Matthews. “It’s extremely gratifying to support each young athlete as they discover just what they can do.”

Three Spartans were competing at the entry or Participation level. First-time competitor Jordan Beaton swam to third place in the 25-metre freestyle and recorded best times in each of his events. John Adams and Lindsay Jurcina each earned personal best awards for all of their swims.

Both Level 1 swimmers qualified to move up to the next level.

Jake Adams swam all personal bests, as he placed first in the 200-metre Individual Medley, second in the 500-metre breaststroke and third in the 50-metre-free.

Ella McGuigan ranked first in the 50-metre breaststroke and fifth in the 200-metre IM, while earning best times in three of her events.

Competing as a Level 2 swimmer, George Clark earned personal bests in each event.

He placed second in the 200-metre freestyle, third in the 50-metre breaststroke and fourth in the 50-metre freestyle.

“This was the first meet for one swimmer, and two others qualified for the top level of the program,” said Matthews. “Everyone swam well and the group realized 95 per cent personal best times. I’d call the weekend a success.

The Spartans home-pool at the YMCA recently re-opened after undergoing renovations.

“With the reopening of the YMCA pool, the Spartans are glad to be back in Amherst as they prepare for the provincial championships in May,” said Matthews.
