OXFORD – 4-H tug of war teams dug in deep as they waged war for supremacy inside the Oxford Arena Tuesday during the Cumberland County Exhibition.
In the final battle it was 10 warriors from the Linden 4-H Club pitted against a battalion of 10 warriors from the Sunrise and Three-Way 4-H Clubs.
In the end it was the Linden 4-H Club that won.
“I kept telling them to lean, butts up and shoulders back,” said Linden coach Heather Bacon. “We also have a good back-turn, so that helped a lot.”
A back-turn is when the competitors turn in the direction they’re pulling and have the rope across their back.
The anchorman for the Sunrise/Three Way team, Matthew Hicks, said his team was doing well with the back-turn but decided to go back to the traditional style pull.
“We got a pretty good lead on them and we got tired,” Hicks said.
“We should have kept going with the back-turn. It gives a bit more strength and a bit more pulling power.
Both teams practiced about six times in the lead-up to the event.
“We really enjoy doing it,” Bacon said. “So that helps.”
Six 4-H clubs participated in the events. They were; the Double D 4-H Club, the Oxford 4-H Club, the Bay Vista Conn’s Mill’s 4-H Club, the Ro-Win-Lea 4-H Club, the Three-Way 4-H Club and the Sunrise 4-H Club.
After the tug of war there was the Parade of 4-H clubs and then the official opening of the exhibition.
