AMHERST – Snow has begun to fall across Cumberland County as a massive spring blizzard approaches the area.

Government offices and schools never opened across the area while many businesses closed their doors at noon.

A blizzard warning remains in effect for Cumberland County with 20 to 30 centimetres of snow expected to fall during the day with winds gusting to 90 km/h by this afternoon.

Another five to 10 centimetres of snow is expected tonight with winds of 60 km/h gusting to 90 km/h out of the northeast, switching to 70 km/h, gusting to 100 km/h, out of the northwest.

Flurries are expected on Thursday along with clearing and a high of 2 C.

More snow, or rain, is expected on Sunday.

All classes in the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board, both Cumberland campuses of the NSCC, and CANU were cancelled while town halls in Amherst, Springhill and Oxford were closed – along with the E.D. Fullerton Municipal Building in Upper Nappan.

Game 6 of the Maritime Junior Hockey League Eastlink semifinal series between the Weeks Crushers and the Amherst CIBC Wood GundY Ramblers was cancelled for Wednesday night and moved to Friday at 7 p.m. at the Amherst Stadium.

Mount Allison University closed at 12:30 p.m. while TD Canada Turst, the Royal Bank, H&R Block, Dayle’s Department Store, Jim Hatheway Ford, most stores in the Amherst Centre Mall, Bargain Bennies, Amherst Toyota, Amherst Insurance, Red Cross and the NSLC closed at noon.

Other businesses, all branches of the Cumberland Public Libraries, the Bridge Workshop, the laundry and Bargains at the Bridge all stayed closed during the day.
