Bayview, South Cumberland health centres benefit from donations

PARRSBORO – Physiotherapy has gotten a little easier in Parrsboro and Advocate, thanks to the generosity from their local health foundations.
Both the Bayview Memorial Health Centre in West Advocate and South Cumberland Community Care Centre in Parrsboro have acquired new physiotherapy tables with funds from their respective foundations, providing a more versatile work environment for their physiotherapists and an improved visiting experience for their patients.

“They are relatively basic treatment tables, but they are very good quality,” said physiotherapist Meg Mooring.

The tables each cost $2-3000, and provide more capabilities for the physiotherapist to work on hundreds of different exercises with the patients.

The new Parrsboro table is much wider, and has a larger weight capacity than the previous bed that was used, and is more mobile because it is on wheels. The previous bed took up a lot of space, and was bolted to the wall at a fixed height.

In Advocate, the previous bed was “old and dangerous,” according to Mooring, who said the new table makes it much easier to perform such operations as putting traction on someone’s head, which she said can now be done one-handed thanks to the table’s capabilities.

“It’s not just more convenient for me, it’s a smoother operation for someone who is maybe infirm,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the previous bed being taken out of the Parrsboro physiotherapy room will be relocated to Advocate as an excess bed in what is planned to be an expanded physiotherapy room, she said.

South Cumberland Community Care Centre Foundation chairman Lisa Ward said she was very pleased to see the new equipment being put to such steady use, during a recent visit to the centre.

“It gets reported to us what is needed, and we look at our budget to see what funds are available, to see what we can afford to provide,” she explained. “Most times we can provide what they are asking for.”
