Up to 25 cm expected today

Amherst is being hit by its second winter storm in a week.

AMHERST – The second winter storm in a week has brought Amherst and Cumberland County to a standstill.

Up to 25 centimetres of snow is forecast to fall before tapering off later today. That's on top of the 20 or so centimetres that fell on the area on Sunday.

All schools in Cumberland County were closed along with both the Amherst and Springhill campuses of the Nova Scotia Community College.

A number of government offices, including Indian Affairs and Northern Development in Amherst, did not open while most stores remained open.

Highways are snowcovered and passable with caution and there have been no reports of any serious incidents.

Winds are forecast to pick up to 50 km/h this afternoon with gusts to 70.

A mix of sun and cloud with flurries is forecast for Thursday.

Another storm is expected for Sunday, but the forecast is calling for rain and freezing rain and high of 2 C.
