United Way using signage to increase visibility throughout county

Forty per cent down and 60 per cent to go. The new United Way sign in front of the Springhill CIBC received an update Tuesday morning from Cathy Skinner, United Way of Cumberland County executive director. On hand for the update was (from left) CIBC customer service representative Nancy Lowe-Hunter, branch manager Sarah Boss, Skinner, branch support Tracy Stewart, and financial service representative Carl Costin.

SPRINGHILL – Springhiller’s will now be able to see firsthand the progress of the 2013 United Way of Cumberland County campaign.

“It’s great that more Cumberland County citizens will know how it’s progressing and that there is a campaign out there,” said Sarah Boss, branch manager at the CIBC in Springhill.

People going to the bank, or passing by, will notice a new United Way of Cumberland County fund raising thermometer sign on the bank’s front lawn.

“We certainly have a senior population and they may not get to Amherst to see the signage, so to have the sign here in Springhill and in Oxford and elsewhere is fantastic,” added Boss.

Cathy Skinner, executive director of the United Way of Cumberland County, hopes the new signage will help people realize that the United Way raises money for programs throughout Cumberland County, including Springhill.

“We have nine agencies we fund and only one of them isn’t in Springhill," said Skinner. “That’s one of the things our volunteer board looks for when they’re looking at the applications each year. They make sure that we’re providing programs throughout Cumberland County.”

The eight United Way organizations used by people in Springhill are St. John Ambulance, the VON, Maggie’s Pace, Cumberland County Early Intervention, the 211 Program, Cumberland County Transition House and Cumberland County Transportation Services.

“We think we’re getting the message out that the United Way is for all of Cumberland County but that’s not always the case,” said Skinner. “Just because you send a brochure out doesn’t mean the whole population is getting the message.”

On Tuesday the sign in Springhill, and signs throughout Cumberland County, were updated to 40 per cent. The campaign's goal is to raise $15,000, and as of Tuesday they have raised $59,264.

One path the United Way uses to raise money is to send fundraising kits out to various businesses.

“Only about 10 per cent of the kits have come back, so we still have a lot of kits to come in,” said Skinner.

Anybody wanting to donate to the United Way can call 667-2203 or go to their office a 16 Church Street. They are on the second floor in unit 206.
